Two awards in two days, not bad

Raheem Sterling has been named Player of the Year by the Football Writers’ Association after he missed out on the PFA Player of the Year award, which Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk won on Sunday night.

Sterling won the PFA Young Player of the Year award, again, but has beaten Van Dijk to the Football Writers’ award after a fantastic season in which he has scored 25 goals in all competitions thus far. The England international picked up 62% of the 400 votes cast by football writers in the UK.

Manchester City’s Nikita Parris also took home the Women’s FWA Player of the Year award, after Arsenal forward Vivianne Miedema took home the PFA award on Sunday.

Sterling has played a key role in City’s success on the pitch, while also doing commendable work off the field in football’s fight against racism.

The 24-year-old has become a role model for many despite a tidal wave of criticism against him which seems to have calmed somewhat ever since he called out the press for their double standards.

After picking up his PFA Young Player of the Season award on Sunday, Sterling mocked the idea that he was too old to win the award on social media.
