Right, here we go. An entire report about Manchester United, Real Madrid and a much-talked-about transfer that doesn’t mention you know who.
Florentino Perez is Real Madrid’s president. On Monday, it was confirmed that this will remain the case for a further four years after no rival candidates stepped forward to contest the club’s most recent presidential election.
After confirming the news, Perez spoke to the media about his extended stay at the helm of the European champions. As you might have guessed with the transfer window soon to open, there was also plenty of talk about which players might be arriving at / departing the Bernabeu over the next few weeks.
Most of the focus was on who might be joining the club as opposed to a certain potential high profile departure that we are definitely not going to mention.
Eventually, as United fans probably will have expected, talk turned to David De Gea, who famously came within a dodgy fax machine of joining Real on deadline day a couple of years ago.
Already this summer, we’ve seen conflicting reports about Real’s interest in De Gea. However, if Perez’s most recent words are anything to go by, it seems the Spanish number one will be staying put at Old Trafford for the foreseeable future.
“We haven’t spoken to De Gea,” Perez told Onda Cero. “Two years ago we had an issue and then the appropriate circumstances didn’t arise.”
Perez also explained that despite their failed bid for De Gea in 2015, he, Zinedine Zidane and the club’s players were firmly behind current first choice goalkeeper, Keylor Navas.
“The players are very fond of Keylor and also the coach. I like Keylor Navas.”
As we all know, presidents of Spanish football clubs are men of their word and there’s absolutely no chance whatsoever that this situation will change before the end of August. Not even if United were to offer De Gea as a makeweight in a deal for Cristiano Rona… ah shit.
