Renato Sanches was brutally honest when he was asked why he didn’t move to Manchester United

Honesty is the best policy

If you tell the truth you can’t get into trouble.

That may not always be strictly true, but Renato Sanches wasn’t about to lie when he was officially unveiled as a Bayern Munich player today.

The Portuguese wonderkid signed for the German champions earlier this month, in a deal that disappointed many Manchester United fans who had been hoping for his arrival at Old Trafford.

It was suggested at the time that his transfer fee was thought to be too high for the Manchester United board, and instead Munich coughed up the £27m Benfica demanded.

He has been speaking about the move this afternoon, and rather than a massive cash injection into his bank balance, he admitted that he rejected a move to Manchester because the club could not guarantee him immediate success.

“Manchester United made an offer. I think it was well known. But I had other offers as well.”

“I chose Bayern Munich because it’s a great club. They have a 65,000 seater stadium and an atmosphere similar to Benfica. I’ll win titles.”
