Richard Keys defence used as Romelu Lukaku explains goal celebration

He had every right to celebrate

The Everton fans were still cheering ironically when Romelu Lukaku burst into the box and found the net.

The former Toffees man had just hit an underwhelming free kick which rebounded out to teammate Nemanja Matic, who crossed first time into the box. Lingard headed the ball on and who was behind him but Lukaku, who finished from close range.

The Belgium international then took off, cupping his ears in the direction of the Everton supporters in attendance.

Lukaku had done something similar during the most recent international break, when he taunted the “irritating” Greek fans after scoring in Belgium’s 2-1 World Cup Qualifier victory.

It’s Lukaku’s way of saying “I can’t hear you now!” and he has every right to do it.

The 24-year-old was asked about his celebration against Everton when speaking to Sky Sports after the game and he played it down.

“I mean, it’s another goal and I’m happy with the win,” Lukaku said.

“It’s just a bit of banter, after the free-kick I missed.”

In finding the net, Lukaku became the fourth youngest player in history to score 90 Premier League goals – behind Robbie Fowler, Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney – but he admits United should have had more on Sunday.

“We could have scored more in the first half,” he added. “We weren’t clinical enough. Everton created problems in midfield and the manager gave us tips at half-time of how to sort it.

“In the second half, Everton had a lot of control but quality was the difference in the end.”
