There seems to be no other logic behind Rio Ferdinand’s plan to improve Manchester United than that he might need a lift when he wakes up and wants to keep Wayne Rooney on side.

Following United’s 1-1 draw with Everton on Tuesday night, the legendary Red Devils centre-half pointed at Rooney as the potential saviour for Jose Mourinho in his quest to inject goals into his side.

However it’s the laborious build-up play and utter predictability for long stages of the game that seems to be worrying fans more than the goalscoring because, now that Zlatan Ibrahimovic is no longer suspended, that issue should look after itself.

With a congested fixture period coming up that includes some crucial big games during which involvement in next year’s Champions League will be decided, Ferdinand advised Mourinho to turn to Rooney.

“You look at Wayne Rooney. You’re looking for goals. Wayne Rooney is somebody who’s done that all his life… all his career,” Ferdinand said on BT Sport.

“These are big games coming up. Wayne Rooney plays and scores in big games throughout his career. I think he played two games in December!

“I think someone like Wayne Rooney has got the ability, the nous, the know-how how to get goals. He knows how to do it, he’s experienced.”
