As an Irish football fan, it’s very amusing for me to witness somebody’s first experience of the phenomenon that is Eamon Dunphy.
Robbie Savage was introduced to the Hoolahan-adoring enigma on Tuesday evening, when the Republic of Ireland fell to a 1-0 defeat to Serbia at the Aviva Stadium, and he asked his followers to identify the notorious curmudgeon.
“Just listening to this guy on TV talking nonsense about Ireland’s performance,” Savage tweeted. “Who is he?!!”
In Ireland… great result for Wales! Just listening to this guy on TV talking nonsense about @FAIreland performance… who is he?!! pic.twitter.com/QB2aKS5bXy

Well it turns out that plenty of Irish supporters follow Savage on Twitter and were only too happy to inform the Welshman, whose international side shares a World Cup Qualifying group with Ireland, of everything that comes with Dunphy.
Some replies were dripping with scorn.
A man who knows an awful lot more than you.

While some were just brilliantly succinct.
He’s box office BABY

You had some useful background information.

And a solid comparison, which was greatly appreciated by Savage.
Eamonn Dunphy , he’s our equivalent of Chris Sutton

And derision.

But at least Robbie Savage knows who Eamon Dunphy is now.
