Of course Roma’s Twitter account tweeted about Malcom before the Barcelona game

Does this mean someone at AS Roma actually sees the funny side to all this now? Yes, we think it does…

All seemed set for Brazilian winger Malcom to complete his move from Bordeaux to Roma last week. A fee was agreed between the two cubs, who both went as far as tweeting that the 21-year-old was on his way to Italy to complete his medical. At that stage, it seemed the transfer was a formality.

It wasn’t….

An eleventh hour intervention from Barcelona saw Malcom sign for the Spanish champions, much to the annoyance of senior figures at Roma. Their president, James Pallotta, accused Barca of acting “unethically and immorally” over the transfer, adding that he’d only accept an apology from them if they agreed to send Lionel Messi along with it.

Malcom has since made his first appearance in a Barca shirt in the International Champions Cup game with Tottenham.

Now, with the dust settling on his transfer, Barca are preparing for their next preseason game, which sees them take on – yep, you guessed it – Roma.

The two clubs meet at the AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys, in the small hours of Wednesday morning (UK time).

Ahead of the game in Texas, their English language Twitter account – a favourite for many football fans on the social media platform – fired off a special ‘match day’ tweet, making clear they had muted the name ‘Malcom’ and several associated phrases ahead of kick-off.

From releasing bogus Champions League line-ups, their various transfer announcements and now this, it’s easy to see why Roma are becoming plenty of people’s second team purely because of their Twitter account…
