Romelu Lukaku is on course to set new Premier League scoring record after blistering start at Man United

The Belgian has been in phenomenal form since moving to Old Trafford

Even at £75m, Romelu Lukaku has looked an absolute steal for Manchester United this season.

In just ten appearances for his new club, the Belgian has scored eleven times – reaching double figures for the club in fewer appearances than any other striker in the Premier League era. Not bad going, eh?

In the Premier League, Lukaku has scored seven times in seven appearances.  In doing so has equaled the record for the most goals scored by a player in their first seven Premier League matches for a club.

That record was set by Andy Cole after he joined United from Newcastle in 1995. Now, as is pointed out by the Premier League’s official website, Lukaku has another of Cole’s records in his sights.

His goal against Crystal Palace last weekend means that he’s now scored in six different top flight games this season. Cole holds the record of scoring in 26 different games while playing for Newcastle in 1993/1994, although this was achieved before the number of clubs in the top flight was reduced from 22 to 20.

The record for a 38-match season is shared by two more former Manchester United players, Cristiano Ronaldo (2007/2008) and Robin van Persie (2012/2013), who both managed to score in 21 different matches.
