The attack took place after the first leg of the Champions League last 16 tie
A Schalke fan has been charged with attempted murder after a Manchester City supporter was left fighting for his life after being attacked following the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie in February.
Paul Worth, 32, from Urmston in Greater Manchester, was left with serious head injuries from the attack at Schalke’s stadium in Gelsenkirchen in Germany. He required an emergency operation and was also placed in an artificial coma.
Having woken from his coma, he was told by medical staff that he had nearly died as a result of his injuries.
The alleged perpetrator, along with two accomplices who have also been charged with serious assault, were arrested days later.
The main suspect has remained in custody since the attack, which The Independent report he is suspected of planning.
‘I don’t remember the actual incident,’ Mr Worth has written on his Facebook page.
‘I just remember waking up in an ICU unit in Germany and the doctors and nurses were telling me how close I was actually to death.
‘I’ve had staples in the back of my head, my jaw rewired and lost a tooth.
‘Now I can walk up and down stairs and make tea and toast as part of my therapy.’
