Scott Quigg comes out the right end of strenuous slugfest against Viorel Simion

It wasn’t the most technical boxing you’re ever going to see but we’ll be damned if you’ll see a more enthralling back-and-forth bout than Scott Quigg’s victory over Viorel Simion.

Setting the the table for the main course which was Anthony Joshua vs. Wladimir Klitschko, Quigg and Simion essentially brawled in a phone box for 12 breathless rounds.

Simion, an underdog on the night, enjoyed the better of the early exchanges as Quigg showed utter disdain for his opponent’s power, opting to plod forward and accept a shot if it meant that he would have the opportunity to land one of his own.

Rounds four and five saw Quigg’s tireless pace wear on the Romanian but still, he refused to wilt.

A telling moment which summed up the bout came in the fifth when the referee ordered both men to keep their heads up, only for each to nod in agreement and immediately duck their foreheads back into the hurricane of strikes.

Quigg, under the watchful gaze of Freddie Roach, clearly entered the ascendancy in the second half of the fight and began enjoying himself amid the enjoyable ugliness of the contest.

Simion seemed to empty the gas tank in round eight as he unloaded with several flurries but damage to his left eye was clearly bothering him from there on out as he dabbed at it with an exhausted glove.

Renowned for an unwillingness to quit in the gym, Quigg sprinted towards the finish line and the result was never in question as the Bury fighter claimed a 117-111, 117-111, 115-113 unanimous decision to retain his WBA International featherweight title.
