You can’t say it’s undeserved
Sergio Busquets has reached an agreement with FC Barcelona on the terms of a new and improved contract.
Technically, it is not a new contract extension, but an improvement on his current contract. He remains contracted to the club until 2021, although Barça have the option to extend that to 2023 when the time comes.
Busquets becomes Barcelona’s second highest paid player, below Lionel Messi. His buyout clause – as is compulsory in LaLiga – stands at €200m. Neymar’s buyout clause was just €20m more than that, so it’s not beyond the realms of possibility that a club like Paris Saint-Germain could come in and trigger the clause, but Barça are not worried about the player pushing for a move.
Busquets has spent his entire career at the Nou Camp since he was initially brought through by Pep Guardiola and it’s hard to imagine him ever wanting to leave.
Barcelona got their season off to a winning start this weekend, beating Deportivo Alaves 3-0 as they look to retain the league title.
Real Madrid also won, despite having their lowest attendance in almost ten years, and Atlético play Valencia tonight in their first league match of the season.
