Nothing to see here. Just more unrest at Manchester United
This, to put it mildly, has not been a great couple of days for Manchester United.
A 6-1 annihilation at home to Tottenham on Sunday capped a week in which anger had spiked within the fanbase at another shambolic transfer window. Though United have since managed to complete a deal for Alex Telles, their struggles to bring in reinforcements for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad have been there for all to see this summer – most notably in the Jadon Sancho saga.
Bringing players in is only half the story, too. United have also found it difficult to move a number of rarely-used first team members on to new clubs.
Sergio Romero fits into that bracket. The Argentine goalkeeper has played backup to David De Gea for almost the entirety of his five-year career at Old Trafford, deputising admirably in various cup competitions.
He was widely expected to leave the club following the return of Dean Henderson from his loan at Sheffield United. This, though, has so far failed to happen, meaning United are paying a reported £600,000-a-week to three goalkeepers.
Romero clearly wants out. Or at least that’s the impression given by his wife, who used her Instagram account to make her feelings known about United’s handling of her husband’s future.
‘Sergio Romero worked hard for this club,’ the post from Eliana Guercio reads. ‘Last trophy they won, they lifted it with him. He helped the team reach 4 finals / semifinals and he was left on the bench only to lose them all.
‘It is time for them to return the opportunity and let him go. RESPECT FOR ONCE!!!’
