‘There are more important things than rivalry and flying a plane over a stadium’
Supporters from both sides of Sheffield’s football divide have come together to raise thousands of pounds for a local hospice.
The impromptu fundraising campaign for St Luke’s Hospice was started by Sheffield Wednesday fan, James Lindsay, in response to a group of Sheffield United supporters raising enough money to fly a banner over Hillsborough on Sunday afternoon.
The Blades have secured automatic promotion to the Premier League for next season. To taunt their city rivals, who will remain in the Championship, some of their fans had set up a GoFundMe page to cover the costs of a flying the banner – with the message ‘MIND THE GAP…THE CITY IS OURS!’ – over Hillsborough as Wednesday played their final home game of the season against QPR.
“The point is we’re all Sheffield, aren’t we?” Lindsay is quoted as saying by the Sheffield Star. “There are more important things than rivalry and flying a plane over a stadium.
“I saw that St Luke’s were doing a collection at the game on Sunday so thought this would help them out.”
Lindsay had initially asked that supporters reach a target of £780 – the same amount raised by United fans through their plane banner GoFundMe. However, in little over 24 hours, the target had been smashed, fans of both clubs donating more than ten times that amount.
