This makes interesting reading.
A document has surfaced from 2004 which identifies several of Manchester United transfer targets.
Clearly prioritising defensive reinforcements at that time, Vincent Kompany’s name appears third on a list of potential signings in the column on the right-hand side.
Gabriel Heinze and Gerard Pique – two players that did join United before leaving – also feature in the list along with then French international, Philippe Mexès.
The document also shows that Alan Smith had been identified as a potential signing and that Sir Alex felt that a midfield which featured Liam Miller and Eric Djemba-Dejemba needed no additions.
After leaving Anderlecht for Hamburg in the Bundesliga, Kompany of course did get his move to Manchester in 2008. The Belgian has established himself as one of the world’s best defenders in his time at Manchester City, and has been central to the club’s recent successes.
How different things might have been if Fergie had moved for him.
