What’s the first rule of being a good football captain?
Leadership is obviously crucial, but we would also suggest that ‘resisting the desire to throw a spear at your teammates’ should be pretty high up the list.
Sadly, that’s a requirement beyond St Mirren captain Steven Thompson, who claims he was “mortified” after spiking 20-year-old John McGinn in the leg during a training session.
Thompson aimed a spiked pole at McGinn as a prank after the youngster tackled him in a practice match, but it pierced his thigh leaving a gaping wound.
“I threw it for a laugh, stupid me trying to be funny, and unfortunately it’s anything but. It’s a total disaster,”
Thompson told the Scottish Sun after McGinn was ruled out of St Mirren’s 4-1 win over Kilmarnock at the weekend.
“The pole went about a centimetre into his leg and he’s obviously got quite a bad injury. The word seems to be he’ll be out for around three weeks.
“I’m just mortified by the whole thing. It was a daft prank. It wasn’t like I threw the pole out of anger or anything like that. That’s not what happened.”
Thompson has apparently promised to give McGinn his win bonus by way of apology.
