Steph Curry hints he could walk away from $36m Under Armour contract over Donald Trump

Not happy

Donald Trump, as you might have gathered by now, is not everyone’s cup of tea.

In his short time in the White House, he’s sparked protests around the world with his controversial attempts to restrict travel to the US for people from seven predominantly Muslim countries, with several public figures also making their thoughts on the matter clear.

Now Steph Curry, one of America’s leading sports stars, has threatened to walk away from a $36m (£29m) contract with Under Armour after the company’s CEO Kevin Plank sympathised with Trump.

Plank appeared on CNBC earlier in the week, telling them: “To have such a pro-business president is something that is a real asset for the country.”

When asked about the remarks, Curry, a two-time NBA MVP, chose to focus on the use of the word “asset”.

“I agree with that description, if you remove the ‘et’,” he told the San Jose Mercury News.

The same outlet reports that Plank has made clear to Curry that his comments were meant exclusively in relation to business and that he distanced himself from Trump’s controversial policies and comments that have enraged people across the US and around the world.

Although it seems Curry will continue with his contract with Under Armour for now, he went on to explain that he is more concerned with the company adopting Trump’s values than Plank’s comments.

“It’s a fine line but it’s about how we’re operating,” Curry said. “How inclusive we are, what we stand for. He’s the President. There are going to be people that are tied to them. But are we promoting change?

“Are we doing things that are going to look out for everybody? And not being so self-serving that it’s only about making money, selling shoes, doing this and that.

“That’s not the priority. It’s about changing lives. I think we can continue to do that.”

Curry also added that he will continue to constantly evaluate whether the sportswear giant’s values mirror his own.

“If there is a situation where I can look at myself in the mirror and say ‘they don’t have my best intentions, they don’t have the right attitude about taking care of people’ – if I can say the leadership is not in line with my core values, then there is no amount of money, there is no platform I wouldn’t jump off if it wasn’t in line with who I am.

“So that’s a decision I will make every single day when I wake up. If something is not in line with what I’m about, then yeah, I definitely need to take a stance in that respect.”
