This is decent money for a League One side
Sunderland are set to pocket more than £600,000 purely as a result of the World Cup taking place this summer.
The League One side will receive the payment as part of FIFA’s Club Benefits programme, which sees club sides compensated for their players who are on international duty, as well as players who have played for them over the past two years.
As part of the programme, Sunderland will receive payment for current players Wahbi Khazri and Bryan Oviedo, who have represented Tunisia and Costa Rica respectively at the World Cup.
The Black Cats will also be compensated for the appearances of former goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, who now plays for Everton and has started all three of England’s group games.
Sebastian Larsson and Sebastian Coates, now of AIK and Sporting Club de Portugal respectively, will also see Sunderland compensated.
Should Sweden, England and Uruguay find themselves eliminated from the competition in the round of 16, Sunderland will receive approximately £600,000, though that sum will increase should they remain in the competition longer.
The round of 16 stage of the World Cup kicks off on Saturday, with France facing Argentina and Coates’ Uruguay facing Portugal. Sweden will face Switzerland at 3pm Tuesday, follow by England’s tie against Colombia.
