This season’s Champions League and Europa League tournaments could be thrown into chaos
Five of the clubs involved in plans for the new European Super League could be kicked out of the Europa League and Champions League later this week.
Champions League semi-finalists Real Madrid, Chelsea and Manchester City face expulsion from this season’s competition, with Manchester United and Arsenal also expected to be kicked out of the Europa League after reaching the last four.
This comes after they confirmed their intention to take place in a breakaway Super League, along with at least seven other clubs from across the continent.
Jesper Moller, a member of Uefa’s executive committee, told Danish broadcaster DR that a meeting will take place later this week: “The clubs must go, and I expect that to happen on Friday.
“Then we have to find out how to finish the Champions League tournament.
“There is an extraordinary executive committee meeting on Friday.”
This follows a warning from Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin that any players taking part in the Super League will be banned from representing their national sides at the World Cup and other major international tournaments.
News of the breakaway has been met with an overwhelmingly hostile response, with the likes of Gary Neville and Sir Alex Ferguson amongst those voicing their opposition to it.
