Football, cricket and rugby – the sports that define England as a nation.
No matter what class, background, upbringing or education, most Englishmen have grown up with a deep passion/obsession for one or more of these pursuits.
And yet, for one reason or another, we fail in each when it comes to the highest level of sport. Not just fail, but fail miserably.
We qualify (when qualifying is necessary), puff out our chests, and build the team up to be world-beaters – only to come crashing back down to earth.
On the weekend when England were unceremoniously dumped out of the Rugby World Cup on their own patch, this just about sums it up. Gutted…
