He looked certain to take over from Gus Poyet
Thierry Henry looked set to become Bordeaux manager after Gus Poyet fell out with the board over the sale of Gaëtan Laborde.
Poyet was furious that the club had sold a player without his permission or a replacement lined up. At Thursday’s press conference, Poyet exploded in anger at the decision to sell the player without consulting him.
“What happened with Gaëtan Laborde is a disgrace,” raged Poyet, “I asked the club not to sell him until we bring in another player. They didn’t listen to me, they let Laborde leave. We arrived at the hotel today at 11.45am, Laborde was not there. We called him, he was at Montpellier. Nobody said anything to us. I will discuss with my agent tomorrow and then make a decision.”
The club have suspended Poyet and looked set to hire Thierry Henry as his replacement. But in a shocking turn of events, negotiations appear to have fallen flat after the former Arsenal striker made unrealistic demands, according to reports in France.
RMC Sport report that his demands of a £1.8m annual salary and family logistical demands led to a deadlock in negotiations.
Bordeaux are now reportedly looking at hiring former Chelsea, Leicester and Nantes coach Claudio Ranieri instead, as they ‘are working day and night to get the best coach possible’.
Bordeaux owner Nicolas de Tavernost has said that they are keeping their options open.
“No decision until next week,” de Tavernost said. “We are working day and night to have the best coach possible. It’s not easy.”
