Since winning the World Cup last summer, Rose Lavelle has played very little football. Due to the structure of the American season and the coronavirus pandemic, she’s had a lot of time to reflect on the country she represents on the world stage.
After recent events in America – protests against racial injustice sparked by the death of George Floyd at the hands of police officers – Lavelle reflected on her own use of social media and her obligation to use her platform for good.
Having mostly used Twitter and the like to upload heartwarming, light content, she issued a statement in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement. “I was not doing my part and I must own up to that.”
Very aware of the subconscious biases she is capable of manifesting, Lavelle approaches the topic with a refreshing and necessary honesty – we have not been doing enough collectively.
