This Wales/England stat is depressing for English fans, and hilarious for everyone else

Just when England fans thought it couldn't get any worse...

Robert Redmond

While most reasonable football fans don’t wish any ill feeling towards the English national team, it’s difficult to deny their exit to Iceland amused many.

The nation that invented football lost to the smallest nation to ever qualify for the European Championships, and it was funny from so many angles.

There was the highest paid player in the Premier League attempting to control the ball, Steve McClaren going from being supremely confident to being crushed in the space of 20 seconds, and the Twitter meltdown by the BBC presenter following the game.

You’ll be hard pressed to find a funnier evening of television.

England may not be great at football, but their comedy chops are in no doubt.

Wales’ 3-1 victory over Belgium, and their advancement to the semi-finals of Euro 2016, have further compounded England’s misery, and this statistic will make it all the more difficult to stomach, and therefore funny for the rest of the world.

Chris Coleman’s side have won as many knockout games at an international tournament (2) as England have in the past 20 years.

Wales beat Northern Ireland and Belgium in the past week, while in the past 20 years, England beat Denmark in the last-16 of the 2002 World Cup, and Ecuador at the same stage of the 2006 World Cup.

While England beat Spain on penalties in the quarter-finals of Euro ’96, that was technically over two decades ago, as the game was played in June 1996.

However, Wales have the chance to match that if they beat Portugal on Wednesday in the semi-finals of Euro 2016.
