Lampard was sacked on Monday
Frank Lampard’s dismissal as Chelsea’s head coach has provoked a storm among Chelsea fans, many of whom believe their greatest ever player deserved more time to prove his worth in the dugout at Stamford Bridge.
But while many have expressed their frustrations in an open forum in an honest, non-problematic manner, a small minority have sent targeted abuse to players they believe to have stabbed Lampard in the back. As always, it is a small minority but any abuse of this nature is too much.
The two players in question are expensive German recruits Timo Werner and Kai Havertz, who arrived from RB Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen respectively in the summer for whopping fees, but are yet to hit their best form in royal blue.
Werner has struggled in front of goal, missing countless golden chances and having a penalty saved against Luton in the FA Cup at the weekend, while Havertz has battled against the long-term effects of Covid-19 while Lampard put him in and out of the starting XI in a variety of positions.
It is understandable that they are taking time to adjust in such a chaotic season, but some Chelsea fans have held them solely responsible for Lampard’s sacking, calling them snakes in the comments section of their Instagram posts.
The posts where the comments were left were at least a week old, but fans sought them out to let the players know how they felt, piling in on players whose confidence will be low enough already.
As highlighted by @Nino12x on Twitter, some fans commented on Havertz’s latest post saying: “Get the f*ck out of Chelsea! We don’t want you here.” At least he put an asterisk in the swear word, I guess.
Other comments included the snake emoji, the poo emoji, and comments saying: “You are the reason Lampard was fired.”
On Werner’s page, one commenter wrote: “Leave the club you backstabbing snake.”
Another said: “Good job on getting a club legend sacked #wanker.”
