Well, this is quite bizarre, isn’t it?
Toni Kross aimed a subtle dig at Bundesliga club Schalke on his own podcast, with musician Ed Sheeran bizarrely the main focus of attention.
The Real Madrid man made a jibe at the German outfit for their misfortunes in recent years, as they suffered relegation to the second tier for the first time in 2020. However, Schalke gained promotion back to the top-flight last season by winning 2. Bundesliga.
Ed Sheeran recently performed at Schalke’s Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen, with the 62,000-seater stadium full of fans on three occasions.
This led to Kroos – a former Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen midfielder – mocking Schalke. Appearing on his podcast with his brother Felix, the 32-year-old said: “Ed Sheeran has achieved something that I have seen very rarely: that people leave happy from an event in the Schalke stadium.”

It didn’t take long for the German side to fire back, with Schalke posting a clip of an infamous interview with Simon Terodde on Twitter. In the video, the striker, who appeared to have lost his voice, spoke passionately about the club.

“At least we know how to give cool interviews after the games,” the club wrote.
The response from Schalke refers to an interview Kroos gave after the Champions League final in May, where Los Blancos defeated Liverpool 1-0. After being asked about Real’s defensive-minded style, he said: “You had 90 minutes to think about sensible questions. And then you ask me two s****y questions. That’s crazy.
“It’s really bad. Really bad, really. First you ask three negative questions. You already know that you come from Germany. It’s not surprising that you get into trouble against Liverpool. What is that a question? We’re not playing a group game somewhere, we’re playing the Champions League final.”
Kroos has come up against Schalke on 14 occasions in his career, with the midfielder winning nine, drawing one and losing four of those clashes.
