A shrewd signing for Jose Mourinho’s side

Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on the signing of Matt Doherty, according to reports.

Doherty has made 260 appearances in his 10 years at Wolves, during which he has undergone an impressive transformation from run of the mill right-back to one of the best attacking wing-backs in the top flight.

Wolves are asking for £20m for the Irishman and Spurs are expected to bid a slightly smaller amount, with add-ons bringing the total to around £20m.

Since Kieran Trippier followed Kyle Walker out the door at Spurs last summer, they have been reliant on the very much unreliable Serge Aurier to play at right-back.

Doherty would be a notable upgrade in terms of his attacking output and stands at six foot one inch, which will undoubtedly please Jose Mourinho.

Irish club Bohemian FC would receive a 10 per cent cut of the fee Tottenham pay for Doherty, should the deal go through.

Spurs have already signed former England international Joe Hart on a free transfer after his contract at Burnley expired. He replaces the outgoing Michel Vorm to compete with Paulo Gazzaniga as back-up goalkeepers.
