31,000 people feels a bit ambitious, Daniel
Tottenham Hotspur want to host a test event with around 31,000 fans in their stadium, as football looks for ways to safely bring fans back to grounds.
Daniel Levy, Tottenham chairman, made the proposal during Thursday’s Premier League shareholders meeting, saying he hoped they could fill 50 per cent of the 62,303 seater stadium.
With the stadium half full, it would be physically impossible for every fan to socially distance but Levy believes fans could still be welcomed and not put themselves at risk.
Levy is desperate to gets fans back in the stadium he spent so much money on building as soon as possible, having previously said he wants to explore all possible technological solutions to allow fans to return.
The government has indicated that some fans could return to stadiums in October, but at a significantly reduced capacity. The challenge facing clubs now is to calculate how many fans they can allow back into their grounds safely and whether the revenue will meet the cost of the overheads that come with a matchday.
It is most likely that stadiums will be 25 per cent full, if and when stadiums re-open for Premier League matches.
