Turning down Man United will cost Sergio Ramos millions…

Tom Victor

Sergio Ramos has spurned Man United’s advances to sign a new deal at Real Madrid, but it has emerged that a move to Old Trafford could have been even more lucrative for the Spaniard.

Ramos was Louis van Gaal’s top target this summer, and Marca report that United’s contract offer would have seen the defender earn as much as €3m more than he’ll pick up at the Santiago Bernabeu.

We’re not sure he’ll be complaining too much, though, as he still stands to make close to €10m after tax.

That means United were prepared to make the 29-year-old their highest-paid player as well as the highest paid player in the Premier League.

Indeed, there is an argument that United are the ones who ought to be concerned, with Van Gaal’s first choice defence being met with a less than positive response from fans.

More to the point, where does this all leave David De Gea?
