VAR would have changed only one decision from Saturday’s 3pm kick-offs

The system was trialled during five of this weekend's Premier League matches, but only one decision would have been changed, had it been used

VAR was trialled in the Premier League this weekend

During the five 3pm kick-offs in the Premier League this Saturday, Premier League referees trialled VAR as an experiment to see whether the system could feasibly be used during several matches, all taking place simultaneously.

There was very little controversy in Saturday’s matches, bar a tackle from Huddersfield’s Matthias Jørgensen on Wilfried Zaha, who later spoke out, criticising the unfair treatment he believes he gets from referees.

However, only one incorrect decision would have been changed by the system had it been used this weekend, and it wasn’t Jørgensen’s tackle on Zaha.

A disallowed Leroy Sane goal during Manchester City’s win over Fulham would have stood, had VAR been in place to correct the marginally incorrect offside decision. This was the only ‘clear and obvious error’ that would have been changed, apparently.

It is understood that the Premier League were content with how the trial panned out. This season, the system will continue to be implemented in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, although only at top flight grounds. But you can expect to see it in the Premier League before long.
