And while English pundits tried their best to make sense of the defeat, across the water in Ireland the RTÉ studio were all too happy to dissect and analyse England’s dismal performance against Iceland.

The former Liverpool and Bayern Munich midfielder reckons that “the Premier League is average” and that they’ve “sold a Skoda for a Lamborghini for the last 15 years”.

But Hamann wasn’t done there, as he went on to label the Premier League “a fraud” and imply that English players should thank God every night for their nationality allowing them to demand world-class wages despite being just above average.
