Atléti are champions
For weeks it has felt like nobody actually wanted to win La Liga. Every time one of the big three teams dropped points, the others would seemingly follow suit, refusing to take advantage of their rivals’ shortcomings.
About 20 minutes into their respective games, just two minutes apart, both Madrid sides went a goal down on Saturday. As it stood, Atlético would win the league, but they could not rely on Villarreal to take points off Real Madrid to ensure victory.
And so Diego Simeone’s team fought back, equalising through Angel Correa, who tip-toed his way through the Valladolid defence before firing a toe-poked finish past the goalkeeper.
Then with 25 minutes to spare, Luis Suárez – who was forced out of Barcelona last summer, deemed too expensive to retain at his age – broke away behind Valladolid’s defence to slot the title winning goal home.
Once they were in the lead, the home side were never going to overturn the scoreline again.
And so with 86 points, losing just four games all season, Atlético Madrid were crowned champions. Watch all the goals from the weekend’s action below.
