Watch Mesut Özil’s (many) football pals club together to wish him a happy birthday

Is that a tear, Mesut?

Simon Lloyd

Congratulations if you were one of the few people on Planet Earth who managed to escape the fact that Mesut Özil turned 28 on Saturday.

Not only was Twitter awash with tweets to the German international from well-wishing Arsenal supporters, his birthday also got several mentions on the television throughout the day as he chipped in with a goal in the Gunners’ 3-2 win over Swansea.

Because it’s 2016, not many of Özil’s footballing mates bothered to get a card (apart from Granit Xhaka who got a straight red), choosing instead to send their best wishes to World Cup winner via video message.

Arsenal v Swansea City - Premier League

Özil appears to have spent his Saturday night watching these videos, and shared his reactions to each and every one of them in a video posted on his Facebook page. Teammates past and present appear in the video, including the likes of Xabi Alonso, Sergio Ramos, Luka Modric, Mario Götze and a very serious-looking Sami Khedria.

Some are suggesting that Özil even sheds a tear during the video, though we’re not entirely sure this is the case.

Although most messages bring at least a smile to the face of the Arsenal number 11, we particularly enjoy how he shows absolutely zero emotion as Petr Cech passes on his regards.
