Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer received a huge ovation at Old Trafford before the club’s game with Huddersfield on Boxing Day

Solskjaer replaced former manager Jose Mourinho last week and got off to a flying start as United boss with a 5-1 win over Cardiff City last weekend.

Wednesday’s visit of Huddersfield marked his first home game as manager and he received a huge round of applause from the Manchester United fans with many fondly remembering his career as a player at the club where he won six Premier League titles, two FA Cups and scored the winning goal in the 1999 Champions League final.

United fans unveiled a special Ole Gunnar Solskjaer banner in his first game in charge at Cardiff and it was unfurled again at Old Trafford on Wednesday with the Norwegian thanking the fans for their immediate support.

“They’re the best fans in the world,” he told Sky Sports before the match. “Of course I already have my history at the club, but to see that banner is special. I just hope in the next five months I’ll do a good enough job for them to keep singing my name when someone else gets in there.

“You can never set the bar too high because they set the standards. The players that play for this club have high standards to live up to.”
