Cricket is a game that can lead to high levels of embarrassment
A lot can go wrong in cricket. Dropped catches, leaving a ball only for it to send your off stump doing cartwheels, and being hit in the proverbials are just some of the ways the sport can cause great emotional and physical pain.
The ongoing Test match between Pakistan and Australia gifted us a moment more embarrassing than any of the aforementioned incidents, though, as Azhar Ali was run out in the most bizarre of circumstances.
As he executed an excellent late cut, sending the ball racing towards the boundary, having just avoided the the midfielder at gully, Azhar Ali jogged to the middle of the ticket to have a little chinwag with his non-striking batting partner, safe in the knowledge that the ball would run away for four.
Of course, it didn’t. The ball got caught in some longer grass and never reached the boundary. This allowed an Aussie fielder to throw the ball to Tim Paine to knock the bails off, dismissing Ali for 64.
