WATCH: Scotland team’s David Marshall chant is a banger for the ages

Simon Lloyd

No matter what the song is, it always, always sounds better in a Scottish accent

It’s been a long time coming, but Scotland have finally ended their wait for major tournament football.

Their nerve-shredding penalty shootout victory over Serbia in Belgrade on Thursday night meant they were one of the final countries to book their places at the European Championships next summer, 22 years on from their last appearance at a major finals at the 1998 World Cup in France.

The hero of the hour was goalkeeper David Marshall, who, after the first nine spot-kicks were scored in the shootout, was able to beat away Aleksandar Mitrović’s effort. The save – coupled with his wonderfully wholesome refusal to celebrate until he knew his save hadn’t infringed any rules – instantly made the 35-year-old a national treasure.

After an incredibly emotional night – see ‘Ryan Christie Interview’ for  more – the celebrations went on long into the night / morning / afternoon for the Scotland team.

One particular highlight – a chant which pays tribute to Marshall – was shared on the team’s Twitter account on Friday. Rehashing the the words to Whigfield’s Saturday Night, the players can be seen conga-ing their way through what is presumably their hotel.

The lyrics, should anyone not quite catch them, go: ‘Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na… David Marshall’

Already, we’ve a strong suspicion this could be something we hear a lot more of by the time next summer rolls around – especially if Scottish fans are permitted to see their team in action.
