Tonight was one of those nights.
Liverpool pulled off the impossible on Tuesday night, channeling the spirit of Istanbul to once again overcome a three goal deficit to beat the tournament favourites 4-3 on aggregate.
Gini Wijnaldum and Divock Origi were the heroes of the night, scoring the goals that secured Liverpool’s place in a second consecutive Champions League final, where they will play either Tottenham Hotspur or Ajax and go into the match as favourites.
Nobody saw this coming. Not really. People mentioned Istanbul but without Roberto Firmino and Mo Salah? This was almost beyond the realms of possibility. Almost being the key word.
Jurgen Klopp described his players as “fucking talented giants” in his post-match interview, neatly summarising the spirit, heart, and mental strength his players had demonstrated during the comeback.
The post-match celebrations were emotional. A teary James Milner embraced Klopp. Andy Robertson stuck the metaphorical boot in to Luiz Suarez after his act of shithousery backfired. And of course the stadium sang You’ll Never Walk Alone, in unison with the players, arm in arm.
It will send a shiver down your spine.
