Fans may donate but that no official donation will be made to Wayne Rooney’s cause
None of the gate receipts taken from Wayne Rooney’s final performance for the England national team will be made available for his foundation, a report in The Times has revealed.
It was announced by the FA on Monday that DC United captain Rooney would return to Wembley next month for his 120th and final England appearance against the United States.
Shortly after the announcement it was also reported that the FA would donate the match funds to the Wayne Rooney Foundation, as well as light up Wembley’s arches in gold; the colour used by the charity.
Since the announcement was made it has come to light that none of the current England squad were consulted or told about Rooney’s inclusion in the squad. His last appearance for England came in a 3-0 victory over Scotland in November 2016.
Despite the match being officially called the Wayne Rooney Foundation International, the only funds guaranteed to go to the foundation are from bucket collections outside the stadium, with the expected £3 million in ticket sales not being donated.
