Wayne Rooney equalled Sir Bobby Charlton’s England goalscoring record on Saturday evening against San Marino, but then found himself tied with a surprise adversary.
When Cristian Brolli attempted to clear Luke Shaw’s cross into the San Marino six yard box and only managed to glance it into his own net, he gave Rooney some unwelcome competition in the goalscoring charts.
In making it 2-0 to England after 29 minutes, Brolli rained on Rooney’s parade by bringing own goals level with the Manchester United man on 49 goals for England.
It means that Rooney must now score one more to pass both Sir Bobby and OG as the standalone record holder.
