Manchester United’s hopes of overcoming Liverpool on Saturday afternoon may have been dealt a huge blow.
The Mirror report that Wayne Rooney is a major doubt for the game as he didn’t travel with the rest of the squad to their usual matchday accommodation.
Van Gaal and his men stay at the Lowry Hotel when they play at Old Trafford, and Rooney was conspicuous by his absence as the players and staff disembarked from the team coach.
Although Van Gaal didn’t list Rooney as an injury during his Friday press conference, a light training session did take place following the manager’s meeting with the press.
Rooney absence would come as a blow to United who have loaned out James Wilson and Adnan Januzaj. They could however call upon new boy Anthony Martial for his debut.
