If you were a professional footballer proposing to your girlfriend you’d probably do something pretty spectacular to pop the question.
Whisk them away to some sun-drenched island or get down on one knee while overlooking the Eiffel Tower at some posh restaurant.
That’s what makes Wayne Rooney’s proposal story all the more brilliant because it’s the least romantic place even we could think of.
The Manchester United striker asked Coleen to marry him in a petrol station forecourt in 2003 – the year he signed his first big money professional contract with Everton.
“He proposed at the petrol station, said Coleen’s mum Colette on the new BBC Documentary ‘Rooney – The Man Behind the Goals.’
“They were supposed to go for a meal somewhere but he couldn’t wait. So I think he must have got the engement ring out at the petrol station.
“The never went out for the meal. They came home and had corned beef hash.”
Coleen says the young Rooney wooed her by just shouting ‘give us a date’.
Take note gents.
Here’s the trailer for the behind the scenes documentary which airs on October 5.
