Wayne Rooney has been granted a testimonial by Manchester United, and he has vowed to donate all proceeds from the match to charity.
Manchester United granted the England international the testimonial after fans wrote to the club asking them to recognise Rooney’s contribution. The match is set for 3 August 2016 in Old Trafford with opponents to be decided.
“The match night will obviously be special for me and my family but I hope that we can also deliver one or two surprises,” said Rooney.
Proceeds from the game will be distributed to several children’s charities through the Wayne Rooney Foundation.
The news comes as Rooney, who turned 30 over the weekend, comes under increasing scrutiny over his lacklustre form for United.
Rooney has scored just two goals in nine Premier League appearances this season, although he did bag a hat-trick in the Champions League qualifier with Club Brugge in August.
