Phillips was involved in a motorbike crash in December
Welsh rugby player Ifan Phillips has shared footage of his incredible return to the gym just one month after his leg was amputated following a horror motorbike crash.
The Ospreys hooker’s playing career came to an end following a collision in December while he was riding his motorbike near the Swansea.com stadium.
Phillips was rushed into theatre at Morriston Hospital, however, it was not possible to save his leg, which resulted in an above-the-knee amputation.
The Wales Under-20s international has been inspiringly positive since his amputation, insisting that he will continue to stay active and thanking those who have donated to fund his rehabilitation.
Now – just a month after the accident – Phillips’ friend has posted footage of his return to the gym on social media, where the 25-year-old can be seen doing upper body exercises such as tricep dips.
As reported by WalesOnline, when sharing the videos, Phillips said: “First one back trying to get rid of the Christmas drum”.
He previously said: “Those who know me well will know how active I am as an individual and I WILL continue to be so.”
Former Ospreys talisman and Wales international James Hook has wished Phillips and his family well, adding that his ‘positive mindset’ will kelp keep him fit.
He told BBC Wales on Saturday: “You don’t get where he’s got to without a positive mindset. He’ll keep himself fit.
“It was a tragic accident, took all of us by surprise. It’s a terrible moment for him and his family.
“I’m sure there’ll be opportunities for him going forward. Wishing him and his family all the best.”
Over £74,000 has been raised to help with Phillips’ rehabilitation, with a target of £100,000 set in order to access the best possible prosthetic leg.
A thank you message was posted on the appeal page on New Year’s Eve, which read: “Thank you all so much for your kind and generous donations! We have now raised over £70,000. Getting closer each day to the set target!
“Let’s make 2022 the best we can for Ifan. Ifan would like to thank everyone once again for all your kind donations, very heartwarming to see the support from you all. Happy New Year to you and all your loved ones. Diolch. Thank you.”
