Westwood was taken off on a stretcher
West Ham United’s Premier League clash against Burnley on Sunday was interrupted in the first half due to a serious injury sustained by Ashley Westwood.
Play was halted at the London Stadium after the Burnley midfielder suffered what appeared to be a serious leg injury, with both sets of players stepping to the sidelines to allow the player to get treatment.
The injury, which was sustained midway through the first half, occurred after Westwood and Nikola Vlasic vied for a loose ball in the middle of the pitch.
Westwood remained on the floor and gestured towards the bench, with Vlasic needing to be consoled by teammates as he walked away from the incident looking visibly upset.
The former Aston Villa man was stretchered off the pitch after receiving lengthy treatment and was replaced by Josh Brownhill.
Burnley – who sacked long-serving manager Sean Dyche on Friday – responded well after the pause in play and took the lead through Wout Weghorst in the 34th minute.
As a result of the lengthy delay, there was a minumum of nine minutes added time. However, there were further delays because the visitors were awarded a penalty, with Maxwel Cornet missing the spot-kick.
The Hammers sent their best wishes to Westwood on Twitter, saying: “Ashley Westwood is getting medical attention for a serious looking injury here. Our best wishes for him in his recovery.”
