It looks as though Manchester United will allow Wayne Rooney to leave the club this summer.
Rooney has lost his place in Jose Mourinho’s team this season, and it appears as though his days as a starter for United are over.
The United captain’s contract runs until 2019, but a departure in the summer would arguably suit both parties.
Rooney will get to play first team football again, after achieving almost everything possible at Old Trafford. While United will get one of the club’s highest paid players off the wage bill and free up funds for summer transfer targets.
It remains to be seen where Rooney will go if he does leave United.
Clubs in the Chinese Super League are reportedly still interested, and there’s surely a franchise in Major League Soccer prepared to take a punt on him.
Everton has also been mentioned, but is Rooney a better option than the team’s current forwards? It’s highly doubtful.
If those moves fail to materialise, this could be a interesting option for the 31-year-old.
According to Sky Sports, West Ham United are interested in signing Rooney if he is allowed to leave Old Trafford this summer.
A “senior source” at the London club reportedly confirmed that they would attempted to sign the forward if he leaves Manchester at the end of the season.
This move would arguably make sense for all parties. United would move the player on, Rooney would get the chance be a regular starter again, and wouldn’t have to go to China.
West Ham would also land a marquee signing which they seem to be desperately seeking.
It’s debatable that Rooney would be a good signing for the Hammers. The club reportedly want to sign “a proven international-level striker,” which is something Rooney was, but no longer is.
However, this definitely seems like a signing West Ham would try make.
