Wolves’ second goal against Liverpool inspired the same joke about Alberto Moreno

You’re not going to find a lot of Liverpool fans with ‘Moreno’ on the back of their shirts.

Alberto Moreno is, quite simply, not a popular man at Anfield and hasn’t been for some time.

Sure, there were the good old days when Thierry Henry compared the out-of-favour Liverpool left back to Roberto Carlos.

Yes. That happened.

But ever since that rather premature comparison, things have gone from bad to worse for Moreno on Merseyside.

The Spaniard hit rock bottom during last season’s Europa League final, when Reds legend Jamie Carragher singled Moreno out to blame for Liverpool’s defeat to Sevilla.

Moreno has seen his playing time limited this season as Klopp has preferred the more versatile James Milner as a makeshift full back.

But Moreno is still being given chances in cup competitions.

The 24-year-old started Saturday’s FA Cup fourth round clash with Wolves but, again, flattered to deceive and was partly to blame for the Championship outfit’s second goal of the game.

A lightning-quick counter-attack was finished off by Andreas Weimann but several Liverpool supporters felt the breakaway could have been stopped dead in its tracks if Moreno had just fouled Helder Costa in the build-up.

It seemed as though that was on Moreno’s mind as he left the ground to tackle but he both failed to win the ball and failed to take the man, a cardinal sin among purists.

And the same joke reared its head as Moreno’s abilities once again were brought into question.
