World Cup’s ‘worst’ ref to take charge of Manchester United’s second leg with Liverpool

Simon Lloyd

A game between two of the game’s fiercest rivals, overseen by a bloke voted the worst referee at the last World Cup… what could possibly go wrong?

Liverpool take a 2-0 lead to Old Trafford on Thursday, hoping the finish the job against Manchester United and seal their place in the last eight of this season’s Europa League.

It’s now been announced that the game will be refereed by Milorad Mazic of Serbia – a name that you may recall from summer of 2014.

Argentina v Iran: Group F - 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil

Mazic took charge of a couple of games in the last World Cup, generating headlines in both.

Having awarded Germany a contested penalty in their group clash with Portugal, he later sent off Real Madrid defender Pepe.

In his next game, he denied Iran a late penalty as they narrowly lost to Argentina – prompting Iranian boss Carlos Quieroz question: “How can this guy sleep tonight, or for the rest of his life?”

As pointed out by the Liverpool Echo, Mazic was voted as the competition’s worst referee in a poll run by redcardtheref.com, taking over 87,000 of the 110,000 votes.

Let’s hope there’s no contentious decisions, eh?
