He wore a Manchester City shirt and rewrote the lyrics to ‘Yesterday’ at WWE Liverpool
WWE’s Elias hit a sensitive button in Merseyside on Sunday night by wearing a Man City top and celebrating the Manchester team topping the Premier League, just hours after it was confirmed that Liverpool would finish in second place this season.
The heel wrestler, whose gimmick regularly sees him composing songs that troll the local audiences at WWE events, began by encouraging the audience to join in with a rendition of Beatles classic ‘Yesterday’, before telling the audience he had written his own version of the tune.
He then put on a Manchester City jersey to boos from around the arena and sang the lyrics: “Earlier today, Man City won their biggest game. Now Liverpool has no more games to play. Except when they lose to the Spurs three weeks away.”
I probably don’t need to inform you that Manchester City beat Brighton 4-1 on Sunday to claim the Premier League crown, despite huge pressure from Liverpool who finished just a point behind them in second. Liverpool will now face Tottenham in the Champions League final on 1 June.
A clip of the 10/10 trolling by Elias in the aftermath of the football was shared by the WWE on their Twitter, with the caption: “Note to self @iameliaswwe: In the home of The Beatles, you probably shouldn’t rewrite the lyrics to their hit song “Yesterday” or wear a certain team’s jersey! #WWELiverpool”
