Yeovil captain Lee Collins was found dead in hotel after he missed training

An inquest into the death of the Yeovil captain Lee Collins heard yesterday that the footballer died from hanging in his hotel room.

The 32-year-old did not attend a scheduled training session on March 31st, which sparked concern for his safety.

The footballer was sadly found dead in his hotel room in West Coker in Somerset on the same day.

The inquest into the death of Collins was opened by the the Senior Coroner for Somerset, Tony Williams, Somerset Live reported.

In a statement, the Senior Coroner confirmed that the footballer died as a result of hanging, Somerset Live reported.

He said: “It is confirmed that today, 7 April 2021, with the consent of next of kin, Senior Coroner Tony Williams opened an Inquest into the death of Lee Harvey Collins of Newport, Gwent.

“A statement from Coroner’s Officer Ben Batley was admitted into evidence confirming that Lee Collins was born on 28 September 1988 and was 32 years old when he was confirmed dead at Lanes Hotel, West Coker on 31 March 2021.

“Lee was a professional footballer with Yeovil Town Football Club. It was identified that when Lee did not attend for training on 31 March enquiries were made at the hotel where he was staying, and he was found in his room hanging.”

The inquest has now been adjourned until July 7th 2021.

Fans have flocked to Twitter to pay tribute to Collins.

Darren Sarll, Yeovil’s manager, said on a post on Twitter: “The ground has been flooded with flowers, scarves, shirts and messages paying respects to Lee. Seeing this visible representation of our shared love for Lee grow day by day, has brought me great comfort.”
