Move over, Skype. The future of conversation is going to be intimate and intrusive…
Holoportation, a new type of 3D capture technology that allows high-quality models of people you know to be reconstructed, compressed and transmitted into your living room, in real time, is finally here. And it looks bloody awesome!
Talk of virtual reality is everywhere on social media right now, usually in the context of gaming, movies and future versions of Facebook. The real USP of holograms and the coming holo-revolution, however, is its potential for interactive chat.
When combined with already available HoloLens technology, Holoportation allows users to see, hear, and interact with remote participants in real time, sharing space and hopefully a laugh or two in the process.
Right now it’s unclear if, or when, holoportation will be commercially available, and the special cameras needed are expected to be hella expensive. But in about five years your house might just need a new Holo-room.
Microsoft is expected to demonstrate HoloLens at their Build developer San Francisco tech conference next week.
