But rather than the tough love approach of forcing them to flee charging robot cheetahs or eat passable but probably a bit bland robot-made sandwiches, one group of scientists have an altogether kinder tactic.
The team at the Interactive Architecture Lab have developed a robot climbing frame that uses GPS to find groups of children to play with.
