WhatsApp to be blocked on millions of phones from today

Kieran Galpin

It’s upgrade time if you want to keep using WhatsApp

Starting from November 1, free chat tool Whatsapp will stop working on millions of phones across the world in a bid to amp up the security of the popular messaging platform.

Users of particularly outdated handsets will find themselves unable to use Whatsapp in the next few days. If you are able to continue functioning without the app, then it’s chill – but if not, you may have to upgrade.

Creators behind the app say that they are hoping to keep things secure and safe for users, which means they are phasing out older phone models. Users will no longer have access to messages, photos, videos and anything exclusively stored on the application.

There is hope for those who love their older models though; certain users will only have to install a fresh update to keep their Whatsapp access. These devices include the iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus, iPhone SE and iPhone variants.

If you have anything older than an iPhone 4S, which came out in 2011, then your only option will be to upgrade to a better device.

For Android users (because yes, they exist too), you will need an operating software of 4.1 or above.
